The trailer test is required!

• If you passed your car (Category B) test after January 19, 2013, you are permitted to tow small trailers weighing not more than 750 kg and a trailer weighing more than 750 kg. The combined weight of the trailer and the towing car or van is not greater than 3.5 tonnes MAM (maximum authorised mass, which is the maximum weight the vehicle can weigh when it is loaded).
• If you took your driving test between January 1, 1997, and January 18, 2013, you are authorised to operate a vehicle with a maximum MAM of 3.5 tonnes and tow a trailer weighing up to 750 kg. If the combined MAM of the trailer and the towing vehicle is less than 3.5 tonnes, it is also possible to tow a trailer weighing more than 750 kg MAM.
• You are typically permitted to operate a vehicle and trailer combinations up to 8.25 tonnes MAM if you completed your driving test before 1st January 1997.
• If you passed your vehicle test after January 1, 1997, you'll need to take the car and trailer training test to earn Category E on your licence. If you intend to tow a trailer with a combined maximum weight (car, trailer, horses, tack, and water) of between 3.5 tonnes and 8.25 tonnes.
